Stephen van Coller

VP: Digital Services, Data Analytics, Business Development MTN

Stephen van Coller joined MTN Group in October 2016. His role as Vice President: Digital Services, Data Analytics and Business Development will be instrumental in shaping MTN’s
strategy to futureproof the business.

The MTN Group is a leading emerging market mobile operator and is listed on the JSE Securities Exchange as MTN. As of 31 December 2016, MTN recorded 240.4 million subscribers across its operations in 22 countries in Africa and in the Middle East. MTN Mobile Money has 50 million registered customers, 17 million active on a monthly basis. Stephen has been tasked with rapidly digitizing the customer experience and creating a data driven culture in MTN.

Stephen is a member of the MTN Group Executive Committee, Group Transformation Board and the Group Operations Committee. He is also a keen participant at World Economic Forum where he is a committee member on the Shaping the Future of Digital Economy and Society working on the Internet for All project as well as the Shaping the Future of Financial and Monetary Systems committee.

Before joining MTN Group, Stephen had over 20 years within the Banking Sector. He was at Barclays Africa Group from 2006-2016 where he was Chief Executive of Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB), a member of the Barclays Africa Group Limited Executive Committee and chaired the Citizenship and Innovation Committees across Africa. He was also a member of the Barclays Plc Global Investment Committee, the Barclays Social Innovation Fund and was Chairman of The Absa Foundation Trust.

Prior to joining Barclays, Stephen was at Deutsche Bank in Johannesburg from 1996-2006. His last role was Managing Director Head of Corporate Coverage and Advisory. He was a member of the Executive Committee, a member of the Transformation Committee, and was also a trustee of Deutsche Bank’s social trust – which oversees the firm’s corporate social responsibility spending in the country.

Stephen’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Stellenbosch and a Higher Diploma in Accounting from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and the United Kingdom Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
